Organic makeup has been all the rage in the past few years, and while there are still people who are opposing it, the majority agrees: organic is better. And in theory, that is completely true: organic makeup is made with the environment in mind, and it usually doesn’t have a lot of harmful ingredients. But it’s far from perfect, and sometimes you just need to go for something synthetic. So to help you weigh your options and see what is best for you, here are the pros and cons of organic makeup:
Pro: They’re better for the environment
We have already reached an alarming level of waste and pollution on our planet, and the beauty industry is not excluded from this problem. The practices of using synthetic materials in makeup production are extremely detrimental to our surroundings. With natural, organic makeup, the situation isn’t perfect, but it is a lot better. This goes tenfold for small shops that hand-make their cosmetics, or if you are making your own at home. Organic makeup also often comes packaging-free, like many Lush products, or in packaging that is easily biodegradable or reusable.
Con: They don’t last as long
If a product is truly organic, then it shouldn’t contain any artificial preservatives. And while this is great news for your skin, it’s not as great as the date on the packaging. We often have a tendency to keep using makeup products long after their expiration date, but with organic products, you will easily be able to tell when they’ve gone bad. Their smell and consistency will change, and when you notice that, you should throw them out right away. A good way to combat this is to buy smaller packages and only get a new one when you run out, to avoid overstocking and letting it go bad.
Pro: They are often cruelty-free
India has the highest population of vegetarians in the world, and while some people only apply that to the things they eat, many also translate that to the rest of their lifestyle. This is a big reason why we love organic products that also carry the label “vegan”. They are made without any animal products and they weren’t tested on animals. Not all organic brands do this, but if it is important to you, it is completely worth ordering a vegan nail polish from Australia.
Con: The colors aren’t as vibrant
We absolutely love bright colors, whether it’s for lipstick, eyes, or any other part of the face and body. But I think we all know deep down that those bright colors that you can see from across the street don’t come naturally. They are made and enhanced by artificial ingredients, so if you truly want to shop organic, you might be limited to a smaller number of shades, and most of them won’t be something eye-popping.
Pro: They don’t disturb your hormones
If you thought that makeup and beauty products are only skin-deep, think again. A lot of artificially made products contain chemicals that cause endocrine disruption. It messes with the systems that your body naturally uses for hormone production, and the negative effects of this are plentiful: from hormonal imbalances and mood swings all the way to fertility issues and even cancer. It’s safe to say that in this regard, natural is better. You can teach yourself how to read the label on the packaging to avoid any products that can cause these issues, or you can avoid artificial products altogether.
If you are not completely sold on the idea of natural products, you don’t have to throw away all of your beauty supplies instantly. Next time when you have an empty bottle, try buying an organic alternative and see how you feel. If you notice some improvements on your skin, you might start to lean more towards the organic side in the future. It’s the small steps that count, and even if everyone only replaced one beauty product in their daily routine with a natural option, it would be already a huge step towards a healthier planet, and a healthier you. So, even though the price tags can be high and the shelf life short, spending money on something that makes you healthier is always worth it.
