Tips on How to Cover Your Tattoos with Makeup and Still Look Natural

There are many reasons why people decide to get tattoos. Some do it as a remembrance of a loved one, while others consider tattoo as an art and as a way to highlight their personalities. With a variety of designs to choose from, tattoos can also serve as a visual display of cultural traditions, addictions, and even a personal narrative. Check The Black Hat Tattoo gallery so you’ll know how their services can help you achieve all of these goals with the tattoo of your choice or design.

However, no matter how artistic or appealing tattoos can be, there will be instances when you’ll want to cover them up. You might want to do this on your wedding day or when attending other formal occasions that require a clean look. If you want to cover your tattoos with makeup and still look natural afterwards, consider the tips below:

Make sure that the area is dry

1 Before putting any makeup, make sure that the tattooed area is dry. If you’re planning to cover your tattoos in the middle of the day, take the time to wipe off any moisture or sweat with a tissue or cloth. Contrary to the usual makeup technique, applying moisturizer or primer shouldn’t be part of the process. Using any of these will only cause the makeup to smudge, diminishing the effects of your tattoo cover-up.

Choose a cream foundation

4 With the variety of makeup products available in the market today, it’ll be easy for you to find a cream foundation that suits your skin tone and budget. If you don’t have any idea on how you can narrow down your search in finding the right cream foundation for your tattoo cover-up, opt to use ones in pink or peach colours. These colours can be used for any skin tone.

Once you’ve purchased the right cream foundation for your needs, grab a wedge sponge and use a patting technique to build coverage in the tattooed area. Don’t forget to feather out the edges so the cream foundation can blend well into the skin. Depending on the design and size of your tattoo, you might need to use a lot of cream foundation for full coverage.

Powder up

2 After the cream foundation has completely dried up, use a translucent setting powder to set the area. Similar to cream foundations, translucent setting powders also come in a wide variety of types, so make sure you use the one that suits your budget and skin type. If you have oily skin, dry skin, or sensitive skin, scout for translucent setting powders solely made for these conditions.

Repeat the process

3If your tattoos were already covered by following the first three steps, you’re good to go. However, if your tattoos are still visible, consider repeating the process of applying cream foundation and translucent setting powder until you’ve fully covered your tattoos. This will require time and effort, especially if you have a large tattoo.

If your tattoos are inked in hard-to-reach areas like your back, consider asking a friend for help. Having a friend will make the cover-up faster and easier. Plus, your friend can apply better coverage because they can have a full view of your tattoo and thus control the makeup application.

Covering your tattoos using makeup is an easy task once you know how. It only requires minimal products and a short amount of time. Aside from following the tips listed above, consider the following tricks so you can obtain the best possible results when covering your tattoos with makeup:

  • As mentioned, the amount of time and effort you’ll spend covering your tattoo will depend on its size. If you have a full-sleeve tattoo, you’ll need to have more patience in covering it compared when you only have a four-word tattoo. However, if you think your look for a specific occasion will be better without a tattoo, all of the effort you’ve put into covering it will be worth it at the end. Use this as your motivation so you’ll continue with the process.
  • When covering your tattoos with makeup, make sure that you’ve properly set the foundation by applying a generous amount in the tattooed area. Doing this will prevent any colour transfer while ensuring that the foundation will actually last throughout the day.
  • Once your tattoos are fully covered with makeup, try your best to avoid scratching, rubbing, or touching the area. These can lessen the longevity of the cover-up. You can also spray the tattooed area with extra hold aerosol hairspray or organic makeup setting spray for longer and better results.

  1. Thanks for helping me understand that the foundation must be applied generously to ensure that it will last for the whole day. I just needed to know about this since I have to cover up the tattoo on my arm to properly wear the gown during my sister’s wedding. I guess I will hire an artist to do this effectively since I am not that skilled with makeup as well.
